Active Media was founded as a graphic design and computer based web training firm in May of 2000 by Matt Nelson and Jules Helm. Their first project was for CNF Transportation, creating computer based training materials for their Emery Worldwide division. By 2001, Jules Helm sold his shares in the company and relocated to New York City to pursue a career in film and Broadway production, leaving Matt Nelson as the controlling partner. In 2001, in conjunction with the growth of the dot-com industry, Active Media expanded their services to include print brokering services.
In the summer of 2003 several events occurred that would change the direction and focus of the company.
In July 2003, Active Media participated in creating fundraiser cards for both the Tigard and Tualatin High School Bands. This was the company's first step into advertising sales programs. The program received excellent support from local area businesses and was a success for the band programs.
In August of 2003, Active Media partnered with the Tigard Chamber of Commerce to produce a fundraising coupon book. The booklet was called the "Tigard Advantage Guide" and was released on October 15, 2003 20,000 copies of the single color coupon booklet were hand distributed to businesses in the Tigard area over a two-day period.
Although there was never an intention of a second issue, participants insisted, as they were seeing a great response from the community. A few modifications were made and the second issue was released in January of 2004. The new and improved version of the Tigard Advantage Guide was a full size magazine and was printed in full color. More importantly, the magazine was directly mailed to Tigard residents. This publication was an even bigger success and paved the way for the Advantage Guide to add multiple cities in the Southwest Portland Metro Area.
The unprecedented success of the second release enabled Active Media to switch from newsprint to glossy paper and add three cities to the distribution: Tualatin, Sherwood and Lake Oswego. This release was mailed on April 15, 2004.
The April 2004 release was well received, and catapulted Active Media into becoming primarily a direct mail advertising company, as opposed to the print and graphic design services it was based on. The Advantage Guide continues to grow both locally, and by adding more cities of distribution in the Portland Metro area.
In May of 2007, a Spanish Artist by the name of Sergio Ordonez, created Active Media's official mascot, Zuno The Frog. Zuno's image has graced the front cover of practically every magazine and postcard produced since 2007, and is an instrumental part of the online based coupon website frogcoupons.com.
In June 2007, Active Media purchased a competing publication called "Your Neighborhood Magazine." This publication ran as a separate publication until 2009 when it was merged with the Advantage Guide to create "Your Community Magazines".
The Community Magazines included coupons, as before, but each publication was supplemented with local High School Sports and City Event Schedules. In addition, some clients were asked to contribute industry expert articles to enhance the educational value of the publications. This new approach increased the shelf life of the publications and continues today as an important distinction of how Active Media's magazines are different from the competition.
In August of 2013, in celebration of 10 years of creating publications, the name of the publication has returned to its original name, "The Advantage Guide."
Active Media is a fast paced, ever expanding and changing company that will continue to provide quality products that drive business to our clients, while consumers save money by using our publications. Active Media believes if we take care of our clients, they will take care of us. So far, that belief has held true, and for that we are eternally grateful.
